Waltzing Matilda is known as a bush ballad, which is a song that tells about life in the Australian wild. Songs of this sort use a lot of colloquial terms of the region and tell of the adventures facing people living in the tough conditions of the bush. Waltzing Matilda is regarded as an unofficial national anthem of Australia. Since it refers to the waltz in the title, you may expect it to be in 3/4 time as all waltzes are. However it is in 4/4 time and isn't actually a waltz. The term waltzing refers to walking on foot in this case.
