The well known carol Silent Night was composed in 1818 by Franz Gruber, and the lyrics were written by Austrian priest, Joseph Mohr. The original lyrics were in German, with the song title Stille Nacht. It was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818. The song has been translated into more than 100 languages. The English translation mainly sung today was published by Episcopal priest John Freeman Young in 1859.
