Also known as Across the Wide Missouri, the song Shenandoah is a traditional American folk song dating back to the early 19th century. The song is featured in the 1965 movie Shenandoah starring Jimmy Stewart, and in the 1962 movie How the West Was Won. It is also considered the honorary theme song for Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, both located in the Shenandoah Valley in Virgina, and it is the official school song of Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. The meaning of the lyrics is up for interpretation. There are many different sets of lyrics, as the tune of unknown origin changed hands through the years as settlers moved west. The tune was also adopted by seafarers as a sea chanty, giving a whole new meaning to some of the lyrics commonly attached to the tune.
