A new piece by The String Club founder, Todd Markey, Pavane and Air is written in Baroque style. It is scored for string quintet (two violins, viola, cello, and bass) and the first violin has the melody throughout, with the other instruments simply providing accompaniment. The two sections are presented here together, with just a brief pause between. A pavane is a slow, stately, serious dance movement. The Pavane section is in A Minor. An air is a lyrical, flowing piece that should sound as if it could be sung. The Air section of this piece is in the relative major of the Pavane, C Major. This key change creates a mood that goes from somewhat brooding and dark to light, optimistic, and soaring.

I have indicated the bowings and fingering that I believe will work best for this piece. Watch for frequent shifts from half position up through 5th.
