The Happy Farmer is a melody from Robert Schumann's “Album for the Young”, Op. 68, a collection of 43 short piano compositions that he wrote for his three daughters in 1848. The full title is “The Happy Farmer, returning from work”. The melody has been adapted and used as a basis for many tunes and styles of music including “Red Wing”, a popular Native American fiddler tune from the early 1900's, and theme songs from many John Wayne films from the 1940's – 1970's.
