Giovanni Battista Martini lived in Italy from 1706 - 1784, and was an admired musician and composer of his time. He was also a Conventual Franciscan friar. He learned violin and music theory from his father, who was also a violinist. In 1725 he was appointed chapel master at the Basilica of San Francesca, where his compositions began to receive recognition. He started a school for composition where he trained many students including Gretry, Mattei, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Johann Christian Bach.
