The term “can-can” has a complicated history, but usually means a fast, high-energy dance, generally performed by a chorus line of girls, and usually involving lots of high kicks. French composer Jacques Offenbach's Infernal Galop from the 1858 opera bouffon (comic opera) Orpheus in the Underworld is the tune now most commonly associated with this type of dance. Instead of its original title it is usually referred to as the “Can-Can”.
