One of Maurice Ravel's (1875- 1937) most famous compositions, Bolero is based on an unchanging ostinato rhythm played by the snare drum, meaning that the rhythm is repeated throughout the piece as the melody evolves. Originally composed as a ballet, it is rarely performed in that form, and is almost exclusively heard as an orchestral piece. Well-known for his abilities as a music arranger, Ravel also made an arrangement for two pianos, published in 1930. To his surprise, as Ravel was his own worst critic, the premiere of the Bolero by Toscanini in 1929 (as an orchestral work) was received with wide acclaim.
